Although some of the ideas are included solely for comic relief, other ideas are actually quite useful. I especially enjoyed the "Glossary of Teenage Slang" section. This is a "must-read" for parents of teenagers.

Reviewed by Kathy
Rated 5 out of 5

Whiteout
by Vicki Delany
Format: Book

Good read for a hot Texas summer since it takes place in Ontario in the winter. Heroine is interesting older woman. Exciting adventure mystery with just a touch of the supernatural.

Reviewed by Alice
Rated 3 out of 5

The Paris Wife
by Paula McLain
Format: Book

The story of Hemingway and his first wife Hadley in Paris in the 20's. Told mostly from her point of view, it is interesting to contrast this book with "A Moveable Feast" by Ernest Hemingway. For another treatment of this time period and group of people, see "Midnight in Paris," Woody Allen's new movie.

Reviewed by
Alice
Rated 4 our of 5

Shopaholic
by Sophie Kinsella
Format: Audiobook

Funny audiobook. Much better than the movie.

Reviewed by Jennifer
Rated 5 out of 5

Harry Potter y la piedra filosofal
by J.K. It has a wry sense of humor that shows up on every page. Word of caution: this is a real life book so there are a lot of swear words. Otherwise, a fascinating read.

Reviewed by
Christina
Rated 3 out of 5

Not Your Mama's Stitching
by Kate Shoup Welsh
Format: Book
This book illustrates a brief history of embroidery and cross-stitching as well as gives a few patterns that are intriguing to ponder. However, this book is insulting, rude and cross all at the same time. It draws comparisons between people and situations in its attempt to be blase and cool about life. It comes off as mean and snarky.

Reviewed by Christina
Rated 2 out of 5

Water for Elephants
by Sara Guen
Format: Book

Must read! Cary Grant stars as John Rubie, a man who merely wants his life back and Grace Kelly plays his love interest. Overall, Grant's performance is stellar but the rest of the movie is overdone.

Reviewed by Christina
Rated 2 out of 5

2011 Adult Summer Reading Program Reviews June 6 - 10

This week we had 7 entries! This book ties all the loose ends of the previous books together, Donati's writing is vivid and historically accurate, with finely drawn characters and settings. Begin with Elizabeth's arrival in Into the Wilderness and follow her family's tragedies and triumphs through the series. The book's plot deals with a clone model named Kathy H. Her purpose in life is to donate her organs to humans in need of them. The author attempts to make the reader sympathetic toward Kathy H. and her lot in life. However, the author fails to do so, because he did not give the subject of cloning a proper foundation. He never declares whether or not cloning is right or wrong. By failing to do so, the question does the end justify the means becomes pointless. IF the means are neither right or wrong, why should I care if they justify the end? I could not connect with the characters and the book fell flat because of this.

Rated 1 out of 5
Reviewed by Amanda

Unafraid
by Francine Rivers

A wonderful Bible story comes to life about the virgin who brought our Lord into this world, her joys and fears and unfailing faith in God!

Rated 5 out of 5
Reviewed by E.

The Prophet
by Francine Rivers

Wonderful story of obedience to God's calling.

Rated 4 out of 5
Reviewed by E.

Arrow of God
by Chinua Achebe

Rated 4 out 5
Reviewed by Stella

Things Fall Apart
by Chinua Achebe

Okonkwo, a great man of his time was a complete opposite of his father. Also pointed out that traveling is fun but you can go on "overload" if you try to take on too much - also that it's always great to get back home!

Rating: 4 out of 5
Reviewed by Pat
__________________________________________________________________________________

Weke
Lisa McMann

Rating: 4 out of 5
Reviewed by Gina
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________

2009 Adult Summer Reading Program Reviews June 7 - 13

Divine Justice
David Baldacci

Last book of a series.
